Dramatically reducing current greenhouse gas emissions is essential to slow global warming. But it's not enough. Farms must address carbon sequestration.

According to the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, the world must also remove around an additional 10 gigatons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere each year by mid-century. That’s twice what the U.S. emits from burning fossil fuels each year. Capturing CO2 from the air and sequestering it long-term is known as carbon dioxide removal or CDR.

Scientists are also examining how agricultural practices such as reduced tilling and use of cover crops. Some scientists estimate that agricultural soils could remove 4-6% of annual U.S. emissions.

Sweet Wheel Summerland Farm is part of the local solution, not adding to the climate problem. There is no tilling at the farm site and the farm utilizes specialty seeds such as non-GMO heirloom Sonora White Wheat. This deep-rooted wheat has shown remarkable results in carbon sequestration. The use of cover crops are evident and taught throughout the farm. Environmentally sensitive habitats are protected. Further, the farm demonstrates a local climate solution eliminating use of cars for whole foods in a government certified food desert by offering freshly picked chemical free food daily at a community food stand. Income from the stand is reseeded into the farm.
